2019 It Takes a Village Award: The Heritage Fund

Corporate Volunteer of the Year: LHP

"LHP has been a great partner with our Summer of Exploration Specialty Camp, at Columbus Youth Camp. The partnership began three years ago when Columbus Youth Camp piloted Specialty Camps with a community partner most weeks during the summer. The success of the camps have contributed to higher quality of program offering as well as increased revenue. In 2019 LHP along with FFY team dreamed a dream of an international exchange camp, though it was not possible for Summer of 2020, we hope to continue planning for future summers!" -Nathan Larrison, Director of Youth Development, CYC-P

Volunteer of the Year: Cathy Hoehne

Cathy's Nomination: "Cathy has been involved with BBBS consistently for 41 years- starting when she was in college. She is a dedicated and fun Big Sister who is able to relate to all the various personalities she has been matched with over the years, and then build and nurture positive relationships with all of them. Her Littles know beyond doubt that she cares about them, and that she will go above and beyond to support them unconditionally, even in difficult situations. She will also teach and encourage life-skills and responsibility, and hold her Littles accountable! Her last match ended recently after 6 years, and when asked why she wanted to be rematched right away, she said, 'As long as I can make a difference for a child, I'm going to!' Cathy also has volunteered in other programs within FFY over the years, and was most recently involved at Bowl For Kids Sake last weekend."

2020 Bowl for Kids’ Sake Awards:

Bankers’ Bowl- Centra Credit Union

Top Bank Branch- Centra's 2nd Best Team

BBBS would like to recognize Big Brother Bob Langdon and Little Brother Damion Rains, and Big Sister Jean Langdon and Little Sister Martha Rains.

"Bob and Damion have been matched for just over 6 years, and Jean and Martha have been matched for 8 years. Damion and Martha are siblings, and Bob and Jean have supported them through various changes in family and school circumstances, and have always provided consistent, reliable support in their lives. Bob and Jean have always treated the matches individually, even though they are married and matched with siblings- they will arrive separately to the same BBBS event, so that they can have one on one time with their Littles afterwards! We appreciate their dedication and commitment."

2019 Friend of Camp Award: Britt Brewer

"Britt Brewer has volunteered much time and effort into Columbus Youth Camp. The Design specialty camp he spearheaded was educational and fun in its first year and is looking to be even cooler this summer. His expertise, experience, and positive attitude has been an amazing resource for FFY and we can’t thank him enough. Thank you to all the volunteers this year and especially Britt." -Brian Cain, CYC Program Director

2019 Coach of the Year Award: Juliana Bernabe

"Juliana Bernabe is a familiar face at Foundation For Youth. She served as an
AmeriCorps member in 2015 and following her service year was hired on part-time to coordinate both Girls On The Run and Trailblazers programs. She started volunteer coaching March 2015 and has continued every season putting her at a total of 11 seasons.
Juliana not only dedicates her time as a volunteer coach, but attends pre-season coach training to facilitate an example lesson for incoming new coaches, answer frequently asked questions about coaching and share her experience as a veteran coach. Juliana has been a Head Coach for teams ranging from 14 to 51 girls and puts her heart and soul into every season regardless of team size. She goes above and beyond the expectations of a volunteer coach and is a great example for the hundreds of girls she has mentored over the past 5 years."

-Ashley McDermott, Athletics Director

“I wish we had something like this when I was growing up. I love how it reminds the girls that they can do anything that they put their mind to. The girls learn to not be afraid to express themselves, not allow other people to define them, how to surround themselves with positive people and a positive attitude and how to support and give back to their community.” - Juliana Bernabe

2019 Employee of the Year Award: Brian Cain

"When it comes to the mission of Foundation For Youth, “Inspire and Enable our Youth, our Community, our nominee for Employee of the Year exemplifies these qualities and more to their fullest.
This employee facilitates many conversations, discussions and activities with conviction, positivity and professionalism. They not only do this from Columbus Youth Camp, but from the classroom as well.
At Columbus Youth Camp, their love of nature, the outdoors and camp itself is contagious. They share their knowledge with all youth of the community that visit there, FFY kids and more. With a year of changes and challenges, this employee stepped up, didn’t miss a beat and did their best to keep the integrity of Columbus Youth Camp, Foundation For Youth, and our mission.
They are able to engage, encourage and enable not only youth, but also adults, as they work closely with local schools to increase programming of the 40 Developmental Assets. They train, manage, and organize other staff members to present amazingly impactful programming to students at Hauser High School and beyond.
This employee takes the time to listen, he is trusted and able to gain the attention and respect of young people, engaging them in those “aha” moments!
This employee is dedication by definition. Creating amazing programming at Columbus Youth Camp, representing Foundation For Youth in our community and a wallop of a kickball player, we are lucky to have him on our team." -Tim Green, Boys & Girls Club Assistant Director, CYC-A

Our members can rely on her to be present and engaged, the art room is a safe space for many members, thanks to Makenzie's dedication. Makenzie plans to study in the fall at Indiana State University to study to become a Counselor." - Nathan Larrison, Director of Youth Development, CYC-P

Carlin Lucas Boy of the Year Award: Luis Ernesto (Ernie) Burrola Ortegon

"Ernie is a Junior at Columbus Signature Academy New Tech. He was first involved with FFY when he was in elementary school attending our Saturday Spanish school, where his mother taught. His older brother Aaron was a teen staff, and Ernie aspired to be that. Before he was legal working age, Ernie was advocating for a position as a teen staff. Soon after he was hired and still works making our staff and members smile each and every day! Ernie is a fan favorite and works in the Maker Studio on our carvey and 3-D printers. Ernie has had a long running dream of running his own taco truck. To get there he is considering which school to attend for either a Business and/or Physics degree. He is considering IU Bloomington."

- Nathan Larrison, Director of Youth Development, CYC-P

About the Carlin Lucas Awards: Carlin Lucas Family to award one boy and one girl with a scholarship to support their goal of achieving post-secondary education. He worked his professional career with other Boys & Girls Clubs across the country. The Carlin Lucas Boys & Girls Club Scholarship winners are selected based on their involvement, commitment and service to Foundation For Youth, their community, their peers, and most of all, #FFYKids.
